The main reasons for loose nuts

1. Lateral Vibration

This is the primary cause of nut self-loosening. Under cyclic lateral loads, slight slippage occurs between the threaded contact surface and the supporting surface, causing a temporary decrease in friction. The nut rotates in the opposite direction, and the preload is gradually lost. This problem is frequently encountered in construction machinery, rail transportation, and wind power equipment.

2.Thermal Expansion and Contraction: The bolt and the connected parts have different coefficients of linear expansion, and temperature fluctuations will change the clamping force. Repeated temperature cycles will reduce the preload, causing loosening, which is common in pipes, engines, and high-temperature equipment.

3. Insufficient Preload or Incorrect Tightening Torque: Too little tightening torque cannot maintain a stable clamping force; too much torque will cause the bolt to yield, resulting in permanent deformation and a loss of preload. Many on-site assembly personnel operate based solely on experience and do not follow ISO/DIN standard torque specifications.

4. Poor surface condition of contact surfaces and threads: Dirty threads, burrs, uneven plating thickness, and uneven mating surfaces can create gaps. Under stress, micro-slippage occurs, weakening the friction locking effect.

5. Mismatched bolt and nut strength grades: If the strength grade of the nut and bolt is incompatible, thread stripping and uneven stress distribution are likely to occur under dynamic loads, leading to loosening and failure.

Anti-loosening solution

1. Mechanical Locking (Forced Locking, High Reliability)

- Nylon Lock Nut (DIN 985): The nylon ring generates frictional resistance on the thread, suitable for normal temperature and general vibration conditions.

- All-Metal Lock Nut (DIN 980): No plastic parts, high temperature resistant, suitable for high-temperature industrial environments.

- Slotted Nut + Cotter Pin, Locking Washer: Physically restricts nut rotation, used for heavy-duty, high-safety-level connections.

2. Add friction-based solutions

Spring washers are suitable for static loads; **not recommended for strong vibration conditions**, as they cannot effectively prevent lateral slippage. Disc springs can maintain stable preload under limited deformation.

3. Threadlocker

Threadlocker fills the thread gaps and prevents relative rotation of the threads. Depending on maintenance requirements, choose either a removable or permanent locking type.

4. Assembly and Structural Optimization

Use a calibrated torque tool to assemble according to the standard torque value; improve the flatness of the mating surfaces and clean the threads before assembly; select bolts and nuts with matching strength grades.

FAQ

Q1: Are spring washers effective at preventing loosening?

A: Spring washers are usable under static loads, but their reliability is poor under conditions of strong lateral vibration.

Q2: How to choose between nylon lock nuts and all-metal lock nuts?

A: Nylon lock nuts offer better value for money, but have temperature limitations; all-metal lock nuts are heat-resistant but have a limited number of reusable uses.
